Paint to the Music

  #
I have to say that I am still riding the crest of the creative ripples from Fort Wendy, and I've been inspired to organize a night of "painting to the music."

Participants can either bring paints/canvases/etc., or musical instruments. One medium can inspire the other as we strive to close the loop.

Looks like the farmhouse/Fort Wendy is booked for the fall, so I am seeking alternate locations. Does anyone know of available space where this could be a mid-October reality?

This is definitely not closed to other modes of expression -- integration is a key concept.

How's October 18 or 19 look?

a call for existing online artwork

I'd like to start promoting artwork done by Outside Circle members that already exists online. I'm thinking some sort of directory of everything from photography, writing, music, and on and on...

Everyone and No One

  #
I was so impressed with the four-panel mixed-media mural created by Fort Wendy's attendants that I have taken steps to preserve the finished pieces and present them mounted on masonite panels. If these are the first fruits of our collective labor and inspiration, then we have a bright future ahead!

Those of you checking out Ande's photo link will note that the panels are doubled over like potato chips (from just being painted on one side), so I gessoed the backs, which flattened them nicely. I also varnished the front surfaces to keep the pastel, charcoal, etc. from getting smudged. This had the added benefit of zinging up the color a bit and giving a slight gloss to the surface.

Once we get a few more collective pieces under our belts, we should seek out exhibit opportunities for the collective. They could combine group projects with individual pieces from collective members, or focus solely on group projects.

Thoughts?

Busker Du

  #
It's official: musicians, grab your gig bags. Singers, stretch your vocal cords. Poets, warm up your word-play. A week from this Thursday, on September 11, OCC members and associates will appear all over the world (thanks Ben and Julia!), bringing music and thought to streets, parks and other public places.

Select a location and a time of day, and let fly with your muse. Remember to sing loud, play only unamplified instruments, and put a hat or instrument case on the ground. Keep the change!

If your time permits it, spend at least 2-3 hours playing out. Don't forget to note how passers-by react. Do they walk by coolly, without eye contact? Do they smile and toss some coins? Do they linger and watch for a while? Do they shout "Freebird!" from across the park? Do they talk to you? Do they join in and sing?

Feel free to play as individuals or in small combos. Let us know where you played and how things go!

Proposal of "Controlled Chaos"

  #

Has anyone heard about these outbreaks of "controlled chaos" that's been going on in major cities across the U.S.?  This is where folks get on their cell phones and on a whim, agree to meet somewhere at a specific time (we're talking guys and gals in suits on their lunch breaks) and create a major scene like making animal noises for two minutes, then stop suddenly and just get on with their day.

It may sound silly to some, but to me it makes perfect sense as to why people would feel a need to take a moment out of their busy and serious work day to be silly even if it is just for a few minutes.  It's fun and entertaining and it reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously.  Besides, I've always wanted to travel with my drum mallets and maybe when we're in a group somewhere public, we might start drumming on whatever is in sight for a few minutes, then suddenly stop.  What do you think?  Should the OCC put on some controlled chaos of our own?

Add It Up

  #
The Outside Circle Collective group found-object sculpture has been launched! As part of the Fort Wendy retreat, a metal oven-bracket and a black bound journal were presented to northern Michigan artist Nick Fisher. Nick will add something to the bracket, photograph its changes and document it in the journal; then pass sculpture and journal along to the next person. In this manner, the sculpture will grow and accrete objects in an intuitive way and its changes and development will be logged in the journal. It is not constrained to OCC members, and like Paddle-to-the-Sea it may never return to us, but rather enter the ocean of greater consciousness. Then again it may bob to the surface at unexpected times and in unexpected forms. It is our hope that images of the sculpture will be submitted to the Collective periodically so we can watch its transformations.

Busker's Delight

  #
I know that we harbor musicians in our midst (gasp!), and I know of a tried and true way to spread your songs. From subway tunnels to university quads, the ancient art of busking has filled the air of public spaces for centuries, since minstrels and bards first stumbled empty-bellied into Old World fiefdoms. Playing unamplified music in public places not only gives enjoyment to passers by, it also recaptures parks, bus stops, etc. in the name of music! I propose a busking syndicate be formed among and outside of the OCC. The sudden appearance of diverse street musicians would be a welcome break from the typically averted eyes of strangers passing on anonymous sidewalks. Tips, of course, belong to the musician.

Outside Circle weekend retreat at Fort Wendy

  #
I am pleased to announce the first OCC weekend retreat, August 22, 23 and 24 at Fort Wendy. What is Fort Wendy? Fort Wendy is more of an idealized meeting point for creatively minded people than it is an actual location...e-mail me at richar66@msu.edu for directions to the Fort this time around. There is plenty of camping space, a pit for bonfires, walking and mountain-biking trails, abundant wildlife, and I am told that crop circles have been appearing in the area. Details will be released to the collective as they unfold. If you have ideas or would like to help out as a volunteer, contact me or Ben.

infiltrating the Ann Arbor Art Fair

  #

For those of you who don't know, the Ann Arbor Art Fair is an anual gathering of over 700,000 people to browse, buy and sell art. This year it is taking place on July 16th-19th in downtown Ann Arbor. Through my connections at Shaman Drum Bookshop (311-315 S. State Street), I will displaying and selling some of my photography.  So, if that isn't reason enough for you to come check it out, then come by anyway to see lots of great art (but beware that parking is virtually impossible -try parking at Pioneer High School on Stadium St., or Briarwood Mall just off I-94, and taking the shuttle into downtown.)

voyage of the stargrazer

  #
to all interested musicians: I am launching a parallel musical collective project to compliment the outside circle. Dubbed "stargrazer," I am billing this as a "non-traditional songwriting think tank." While traditional instruments and structures will not be excluded, the emphasis will be on writing and arranging outside of the box. Improvisation as a compositional tool will take precedence over improvisation as an end in and of itself. Incorporating diverse elements like field recordings, editing techniques, performance and constructive critique, stargrazer seeks to advance songcraft in interesting new directions. While it may be easier to meet in person or exchange tapes or files at first, eventually a web-based archive of some of our results will be a goal.

This is an online gallery. Mostly visual artists: painters, illustrators, photographers, and designers. Wide range of talent and skill level as I've seen so far from the contributors. Even contains forums/blogs/posts for discussions, comments, suggestions, and whatnot.

Local Lansing (young) artist group looking to expand the creative scene of its environment through projects, experiments, and exhibitions. The group exhibits once a month for a single day at Bare Bone Studios in Oldtown Lansing, during the Sunday gallery walk (. . . for now). Group roster varies from project to project. Core group within NPH: Aaron Curtner, Tim Lane, Latricia Horstman &Dustin Dorothy Smith, Lorie Waldie, Joe, and myself. NPH is looking for creative individuals to get involved in future artistic projects, experimentations, and the like. The site is being renovated currently before the next show in July. Look for it soon! There is a meeting this Friday the 27th, 8pm at Bare Bone Studios (1236 Turner). We'll be going over July's project progress, but we'll answer questions about the group, future projects, etc. if any of you decide to visit. We're planning to go bowling after the meeting!

Detroit Now

  #
4 galleries in and around detroit are exhibiting 16 contemporary detroit artists- but only through sunday. if you get a chance, check em out. it looks maaahvelous.... "DETROIT NOW" was conceived a year ago by the curators of the Detroit Artist Market, detroit contemporary, Meadow Brook Art Gallery, and Paint Creek Center For The Arts to draw attention to Detroit art "now"; that is to say, contemporary artists producing extraordinary work that have had, up to now, partial exposure. The curators selected ten artists each, and from a combined roster of forty, sixteen "Detroit Now" artists were selected. Each venue features four artists, providing them optimum space to reveal their work. The curators also conceived "Detroit Now" as a pilot project to help their organizations work together to facilitate greater awareness about contemporary art, hoping to engender a frank dialogue about the significance and importance of contemporary art in Detroit. The variety of media in "Detroit Now" includes painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, installation, and performance art. The look of the exhibition across all four venues is inclusive and diverse. In many ways "Detroit Now" might resemble an exhibition entitled, "International Art Now." "Detroit Now" artists have an international perspective and are no different from artists workinganywhere else in the international scene; this is Detroit "now".

Spread the word with an Outside Circle Flier

  #

Ben was kind enough to design an Outside Circle flier to be stuck in your favorite public bathroom, library, etc.

It is in Adobe Acrobat format (a pdf) and if you don't have the Reader to open and print the file, you can download it for free.

moving outside the circle

  #

well, the day has finally come... i have my first public screening of one of my films. it'll be on friday, June 20th at 8pm at the education center on university of michigan's campus.  the film is called "khate: the street children of nepal" and is composed of footage that i shot while in nepal during the winter/spring of 2001. i've been calling it an artistic documentary, whatever that means. the film itself is only 12 minutes long, but i'm hoping to have an open discussion as well following the screening. e-mail me with any questions: juliayezbick@yahoo.com
