Outside Circle Cards

  #

I placed an order a few days ago for some Outside Circle Cards to be picked up at the gallery opening.

They are full color, two sided, full bleed, glossy and I have 500 of them.

Everyone on the OCCswatteam will receive some in the packets that go out this week. If you are interested in joining (or getting the cards), please check the box under my profile (also at the bottom of the page if you are logged in).

I ordered these through a company in Oakland California called PSPrint.  Everything was done over the web - download a template, create artwork, upload pdf, crop and order.

Very easy and very cheap.  They do everything from short run posters, bound books, stickers, to the more traditional stuff and are much cheaper than Kinkos.

info for the graphic design student

in my pursuits i came across this document put together by the AIGA (american institute of graphic arts) and NASAD (national association of schools of art and design) for students interested in studying graphic design. i found it quite on track with dealing with some of the questions i had as student, as well as those i have now considering graduate studies. it is relevant and informative. please feel free to pass it on to those who might be interested.

also, if you are considering grad school, i purchased the USNEW's Graduate Studies web resource which (somewhat biasedly) rates Graduate Programs across the US (as well as lists all contact info) and i would be happy to pass any information to inquiring minds, just email me.

Have your photos published in a book by Phaidon!

Massive Change, an international discursive project on the future of global design, are researching, gathering and assembling information for use within this ambitious effort, to be realized now through 2007, which will take the form of a book, an international exhibition, a line of product, public events, a website, and a documentary film project.

We are seeking images that document the extraordinary and ever-increasing human capacity to understand the world and universe through the image.  Specifically, we are looking for quantities of images that fall into any of the categories below:

. ID photos & passport portraits . photo booth strips . travel & tourism -- posing in front of landmarks . posing with famous people . posed group photos . major news events . massive crowds . rock concerts . underwater photos . birthdays -- blowing out candles . weddings -- bride and groom portraits . silly pet photos . lomography . UFO sightings . security camera stills . helmet cams -- extreme sports . infrared & night-vision . x-rays -- teeth, broken bones, airport security . ultrasound -- prenatal photos

* To be included in the book published by Phaidon Press, images must be recieved by Monday, March 22, 2004. To be included in the exhibition, images must be recieved by Monday April 12, 2004. Submissions for the film are ongoing.

unCAGEd: The Exploration of Non-Intention

  #

unCAGEd: the exploration of non-intention

"A mixed-medium event based on the theories of John Cage, presented in collaboration with UMS in support of Merce Cunningham Dance Company's 50th Anniversary tour

  • friday, march 12, 2004
  • dance gallery studio, 815 wildt st., ann arbor
  • show 10 p.m.

The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) presents a special event inspired by the musical approaches of John Cage. unCAGEd is a night of art, music, dance and spontaneity, honoring the week-long residency of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, with whom Cage famously collaborated. As part of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's 50th anniversary tour, Ann Arbor's University Musical Society (UMS) is presenting two performances at the Power Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13. (For tickets to the Power Center event, contact the UMS Box Office at 734-764-2538 or the UMS website at www.ums.org.)

unCAGEd features a varied group of Detroit and Ann Arbor-based exploratory artists, musicians and performers working/playing in the Cage frame of chance. After choosing 10 artists, the curators of this event paired them up into collaborative teams or two, literally picking names out of a hat. Set into motion by a Cageian preset of "the exploration of non-intention," each pair acts out their interpretations, and the possibilities of mixed-medium collaboration are endless, reflecting the pure energy felt in Cunningham's guided improvisation.

Collaborating artists who are involved in unCAGEd:

Nazanin Arandi
Mike Dykehouse
Elliott Earls
Viki Hott
Jeremy Kallio
Erin Knowles
Melanie Manos
Chris McNamara
Brent Sommerhauser
Scott Zacharias

Music by Ghostly International

Directions:

Take 94 west to 96 west (which is accessed right after the Grand River exit in Detroit) and follow that highway all the way to Ann Arbor (14 begins at I-275 but you don't have to make any turns, just continue going straight), exit at Business 23 (exit 3). Business 23 becomes Main Street. Turn right at the second light (Summit). Turn right on the first street past the railroad tracks (Wildt). Dance Gallery Studio is the only commercial building on the left side of the street.

CAID would like to thank the following organizations for their generous support of unCAGEd:

In Memoriam : Michael Fanizza

  #

Michael Fanizza, friend, colleague, and professor to many of us passed away last week. His incredible knowledge base and intelligence, his wit and humor, strength against the odds, as well as his seemingly endless ability to connect ideas and methods to learn and create anew will be missed by all of those lucky enough to have had him in their lives. The following illustrates Michael's unique approach to the design process, his creative output, and his life in general.(please click on the images to view larger versions)

Like most everyone, I went to kindergarten and studied colors and the alphabet. Growing up, my friends found all sorts of things to become interested in and to pursue as careers. I, however, stuck with the alphabet and color. It is my belief that these are the basis of what a graphic designer works with in assembling visual communication.

As a graphic designer I often work on projects in
collaboration with others (usually organizations) to convey specific instructional messages. However, I am also involved with personal inquiry and experimentation into the aesthetics of formal visual relationships. The work in this exhibition represents some of that thinking. These pieces began as actual meditations. Each day as I walked in the woods near my home I would imagine the forms and counterforms of my initials. I would try to keep track of all various letter components as I moved the forms around in my imagination. [more]

For more on Michael Fanizza please click here.

The poster to the right was created for Michael by friend, colleague, and Outside Circle member
Chris VanWyck. Thank you for sharing your work, Chris.

The Outside Circle will dedicate its first group show in memory of Michael Fanizza.

Please feel free to share any thoughts or memories of Mike that you may have in the discussions.

First OCC Member Art Show/Musicians Wanted

  #
mural detail 2Maybe you know him, maybe you don't...but Chris Alvarado is now a part owner of Cafe Latte, nestled in the colorful "gerbil cage" parking structure in downtown East Lansing.  He has expressed an interest in having art shows at the cafe, and I have begun discussions for an OCC art show in May, 2004.

So get some finished work ready to hang.  The space is somewhat limited, and we will have to be on a first-come, first-serve basis.  While you are responsible for "jurying" your own work, he is asking that everything be framed and wired for hanging (like me, he HATES those little sawtooth hangers...OK, I taught him to hate them).

Part of Chris's vision for vitalizing the cafe is to have openings for these shows, and we are seeking musicians (poets, too) both for the First Sunday Gallery Walk and for an evening reception to close the show.  Once again, this will be on a FCFS basis, so express your interest now.

The show will feature the public debut of the group mural completed at Fort Wendy last summer.  Press is being arranged.

Please check the exhibit prospectus for the entry procedure and other important information.

A BEAUTIFUL VIRUS INSIDE THE MACHINE: ANIMATION WORKS BY LILLIAN SCHWARTZ, 1970-8
Presented by Lumen in collaboration with Gregory Kurcewicz
----------

Lumen present a touring film and video programme highlighting the pioneering work of Lillian Schwartz, resident artist and consultant at Bell Laboratories (New Jersey), 1969-2002.
During the '70s and '80s Schwartz developed a catalogue of visionary techniques for the use of the computer system by artists. Her formal explorations in abstract animation involved the marriage of film, computers and music in collaboration with such luminaries as computer programmer Kenneth Knowlton and computer musicians Jean-Claude Risset, Max Mathews and Richard Moore.
Schwartz's films have been shown and won awards at the Venice Biennale, Zagreb, Cannes, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and nominated and received Emmy nominations and awards. Her work has been exhibited at, and is owned by, The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Centre Beauborg (Paris), Stedlijk Museum of Art (Amsterdam), and the Grand Palais Museum (Paris).
Lumen have collaborated with Lillian Schwartz and curator Gregory Kurcewicz to compile a touring package of these important works. The 55 minute programme features 11 animations restored to video.

the OCCswat team

  #

is your life lacking excitement? adventure? a sense of purpose?
if so, that's really too bad...

...anyway, we've devised the OCCswatteam to spread the word about our artists and our collective: an elite force of proactive art lovers who want to let people know that art is being created every day- galleries are unvieling new work, music is being performed, poets are speaking, films are being exhibited, dancers are well, dancing, thespians are taking stage, web gurus are punching new codes... and all that other important stuff we do as artists.

we would like OCC members, across the globe, to spread the word locally. all you have to do to sign up is click my profile at the bottom of the screen, once on your profile page check off the OCCswatteam  newsletter box and you're officially cool. we'll contact you and send you your official swatteam gear, which will include:

  1. OCC Fliers/Poster
  2. [mini] JOWAI, The Journal of Words and Images
  3. OCC stencil
  4. Personalized OCC "business" cards
  5. The OCC CD-Rom

sound wicked-cool? it probably is.

if you have any questions about life threatening obligations or sketchy covert operations you might be involved in contact ben@edict.com
