We look forward to an exciting schedule of exhibits, all-ages music events, theatrical performances, poetry, dance, and independent film in our new home. (SCENE) would like to thank the Downtown Development Authority, The City of East Lansing, and our neighbors at Ciesa & Associates for their generous support and endless willingness to make (SCENE) a successful, community-based progressive art and performance space.

We have a lot of work to do -- if you can volunteer some time, some expertise, some materials, or would like to make donations, please contact the director using the information above!

Thank you for your support of the arts.

back in the attic again!

tim lane has decided to resurrect the attic!
"
Dear Friends,

I have found a new home for the attic which is desire.  We'll see how this works out.  I don't think that I'm going to post old work.  I don't know how often I'll have work to post.  But when I do have new work, I'll post it.

I guess that this is going to be more of a portfolio than anything, a lot less perhaps than what the attic used to be.  We'll see.

deadline approaching for poetry/film collaboration pieces

  #

Just a reminder to all interested in participating in the poetry/film collaboration: the deadline for your poetry pieces is MAY 6th!!! (unless you have previously contacted me with a legit excuse). So just to refresh your memories, here's the quote from Anna Quindlen again:"

"Otherness posits that there are large groups of people with whom you have nothing in common, not even a discernable shared humanity.  Not only are these groups profoundly different from you, they are also covertly, somehow less: Less worthy. Less moral. Less good. This sense of otherness is the single most pernicious force in American discourse. The not-like-us ethos makes so much bigotry possible: Racism, Sexism, Homophobia.  It divides the country as surely as the Mason-Dixon line once did. And it makes for mean-spirited and punitive politics and policy."

Each poetry piece can comment upon this quote in terms of its domestic or foreign application.  Please feel free to post some of what you are writin in the discussion box so that other poets writing pieces for this project can see what is being written and comment through their poetry. This will help to make the film (when we get around to that stage) more coherent and aid in making the project as a whole more of a poetic dialogue as opposed to several different fragmented pieces from different poets.  Now, don't be bashful and get writing!

If you have just stumbled upon this post and would like more info about this collaboration project, please post your questions to me via the discussion box on the right. thanks!

OK, back to the 501(c)3 agenda

  #

I just wanted to remind people to keep working on (or start working on - depending on what stage you're at) the OCC's goal of becoming a non-profit organization. Maybe you all already knew this - but I just discovered that you can download all neceassary forms for filing a 501(c)3 online from the michigan.gov website.  Here's the specs:

1. first of all, we need to write our articles of incorporation, (the form can be downloaded from the michigan.gov/corporations website... then if you click on the "forms" link, it'll take you to a long list of corporate forms, but if you scroll down... you'll find Form 502 which is the necessary form for articles of incorporation for a non-profit.

2. secondly, I found out that there is no form for the budget... so if someone knows the format of what this should look like, or knows of a template - that'd be really helpful.

so, I guess we'll just start with these and go from there.... hope you're all swell!! Ciao!

OCC + Collaboration .2 Update

  #

Hi all,
Just a little note as to what's going on in OCC land...

We are currently organizing and preparing JOMAS, the journal of words and images, with a scheduled release sometime in May. We recieved an amazing collection of audio and visual work from around the globe: from digital animation, photomontage, documentary shorts and video installation, to sound installation, electronic, hip hop, poetry and lo-fi rock- and it looks right now like we will be releasing a *double* DVD and an audio CD. We're pretty excited.

We have decided to extend the deadline for Collaboration .2 (with no known date yet), because we feel it would be easier for OCC as a collective to secure funds for the travelling exhibition. When we crunched the numbers, it was quite apparent that Collaboration .2 as an internationally travelling exhibition was going to require a lot more money in the bank than we can supply as an 'unofficial' non-profit organization.

Which brings us to our standing as a 501c3 (to those outside the US: this is tax form terminology for legal non-profit status). A handful of OCC members have taken on the task of helping us become a 501c3 organization, and they are dilligently tracking down forms, planning the budget, organizing funds, writing bylaws and all of that other fun stuff (you can view the notes from our meeting here, view pictures here). Our sincere gratitude to those who have come forward to help the group out (if you'd like to lend a hand, please contact us).

We have also asked Peter Richards to design this years
„mini˝ jowai, which we're pretty excited about. We hope you are too (we'll post more info, along with a call for entry and a deadline on the site soon).

So that about does it. Please remember to share and be nice.

Best,
Ben

a small light

  #

Nick Gaydos created a splendid website for the film, a small light, by OCC member, Julia Yebick. A streaming version of the film can be viewed their in it's entirety (and in pretty darn good resolution, as well). The film can also be seen on the big screen at the East Lansing Film Festival (March 30 - April 3) and the Hearts and Minds Film Festival (March 2 - 6).

The film synopis can be read below:

A Hindu sadhu narrates 'a small light,' in which a Catholic nun cares for a group of elderly living out their remaining days at the auspicious site of Pashupathinath temple.

A look at old age, death and dying in a Hindu temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, this documentary is a unique experimental  hybrid of observational cinema and metaphorical narrative.

Exploring cross-religious views on death and karma, 'a small light' follows the daily life of a home for the elderly situated along the cremation ghats of Pashupathinath temple.

It speaks of earthly embodiment and the confines and constructs of the mortal body in contrast to the eternal soul. Through the story of the elderly we see the differing views (but at times convergence) of the Eastern and Western religiously devoted.

OCC 501(c)3 Meeting

  #
I just got back from meeting OCC'ers Michelle, Peter, Nayiri, Julia and Ben at Amer's Cafe in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We took about two hours this afternoon to talk about the steps we are going to take to become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

By becoming a 501(c)3, Outside Circle Collective will be able to better serve our member-artists by making it easier to obtain and provide funding to promote the artists and the collective as a whole. We expect that we can raise funding through sponsorship, grants, membership and donations while keeping the financial impact on our artists to a minimum.

Currently, we are in the process of drafting Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, as well as seeking out the US government and State of Michigan forms to make us "official."

If you would like to help in the process, have some background knowledge or know someone who would be willing to help (a lawyer or consultant), please let us know.

We're new to this stuff.

It wasn't all work though... we took a short, but very cold walk over to the University of Michigan Museum of Art to see the László Moholy-Nagy exhibit.

- nick

New Categories

This isn't anything special, but I've added a new category for official Outside Circle Announcements called OCC News:

Some of the JOMAS and JOWAI stuff was getting lost in the piles of posts that all you OCC'ers have been graciously writing. I've also gone back and reclassified a fair amount of older posts with the category.

The more interesting one is the Outside Circle Collective Artists category.

Please use this category to bring attention to your work and other Outside Circle Artist's work.

Cheers!

OCC's New Year's resolution: become a non-profit

  #

Hi everyone! Hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday season! I am writing to bring a matter of interest to the collective.  We have been talking for some time now about filing for 501(c)3 status to become an official not-for-profit organization/association.  There are many benefits to this, many of which I am still learning, but basically it would give us appropriate status for applying to arts funding and grants.

There is, of course, a process of filing and applying to the IRS for this status, that would most easily be taken care of by a committee of people.  Basic steps of the process include (taken from a 501(3)c on-line Fact Sheet: (Another good resource to look at is the IRS website.)

1. coming up with a 2-year budget

2. writing up the by-laws and articles of incorporation

3. raising $500 for the processing fee

4. obtaining a Tax ID number

So in true collective form, we would like to hold a meeting to collectively write the by-laws, etc, and discuss this new direction for OCC. The meeting will be held at Amer's Cafe on South State Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA on Sunday January 16th, at 1PM.

Moholy-Nagy This is a great opportunity to catch up with fellow OCCer's and work together to further our collective cause, so hope to see you there!

Also, for anyone interested we are going over to the University of Michigan Museum of Art to check out their exhibit of Moholy-Nagy's later photography.

A little work... A little Play!

Cleaning the closets

  #
If you haven't noticed, we've been doing some minor renovations around Outside Circle. We've been working hard, but sometimes, our list gets a little out of hand.

I'm pretty sure there are quite a few things that are more anoying than they used to be, and some that are better than they used to be. I'll be the first to admit that the discussions are more than a little mucked up when it comes to links or other added html goodness.

Let me know what sucks and what works well (you are not limited to just ripping on discussions...).

Leave your comments over in the discussions on the right.
