Silliness...

The internet is a world-wide information network ideal for communication, diaspora of potentially world-altering ideas, and a rich research resource.  It is also home to a lot of silliness, such as the Cyborg Name Decoder.

Found!

  #

(SCENE) Metrospace in partnership with Found Magazine announces the opening of its newest exhibition, "FOUND!" which will be unveiled on Wednesday, March 30.  "FOUND!" explores the recovery and reuse of objects that have been lost, misplaced, discarded or left behind.

Local and national artists participating in "FOUND!" use found materials in unique ways to construct their artwork.  Los Angeles native Kelly Lynn Jones uses fabric and collage to create illustrations.  Scott Hocking of Detroit created his art piece using recovered negatives that he found in an abandoned house.  Ann Arbor based Davy Rothbart and Found Magazine have become an international phenomenon over the past year. Rothbart will share numerous amazing finds that strangers have sent in from across the globe. Doug Coombe of Ann Arbor will use photographs of abandoned warehouses and buildings in Detroit, evoking the beauty found in destruction.  The Portland, Ore. based Suite B Artist Collective employed a search, recovery, and create cycle to make art through found images and objects.  The Suite B members participating in "FOUND!" Include East Lansing natives Jen Kruch and Josh Kermiet, as well as Oregon's James Boulton, and Corey Lunn.

My Funny Valentines -- Look Out, Hallmark!

  #

I know OCC'ers are hopeless romantics, so...

I will be producing a set of 5 different unique Valentine's Day cards from my hearts series. They will be printed out on high quality paper, 4.75"x4.75" (just the right size to slip into a CD jewel case with that sultry Valentine's mix you've made for your special someone). The sets of 5 will be available exclusively from me for $12/set. The messages are somewhat irreverent/saucy, inspired by those insipid little candy hearts. Contact me to pre-order your set(s)!

4 of the 5 designs are pictured above.  The 5th design will be exclusive to the 2005 set. To see larger images, click on the thumbnails.

vice magazine's
guide to djing, covering the essentials: technique, gear, perks and etiquette.

by amy kellner

You know that thing called DJing? Playing records in bars or at stupid art openings for money? Guess what DJing is? The biggest fucking bullshit con of all time! People who get over as DJs are making the easiest money ever, because they've convinced every PR person and club owner in the world that they're doing something only a few natural-born geniuses can do. It's laughable. A 70-year-old blind Ethiopian leper with 10 broken fingers can "spin" just as well as any B-list celebrity at any instore party for some gay snowboarding jeans company. I promise[...]

I've been making loads of supplementary income by DJing for a few years now, and I can barely even scratch my own back. All you really need is a CD burner, Kazaa, and passably cool taste in music. Here, I'll tell you all about my life as a party DJ[...]

Samhain

  #

Since we are rapidly approaching the third harvest festival of the year, I thought that I would kick off the season with a meditation.

Traditionally, Samhain was considered to be a time when the veil between the worlds was thin. (Hence the food offerings left on doorsteps for wandering dead/ ancient ancestors in Celtic countries.) Single candles shone in windows to guide lonely travelers. Apples were buried at crossroads for those souls unfortunate enough to have died without offspring. Men wore women's clothing and vice versa to avoid the gaze of the evil eye.

It was a night of magic and chaos where the dark side of the human soul rose to the surface. If we all have the face of the Stranger within, as Camus and Billy Joel both insist, it seems to me that Samhain allows the Stranger to wear our face for a night. Like the Lord of Misrule in Medieval times, this ability to turn ourselves and indeed---the world---topsy-turvy is a tremendous gift.

Why not invite the Stranger in a little early this year? Having eaten my asparagus (every damned bite) and minded my manners this year (almost nauseatingly well), I'm looking forward to the rising darkness.

Happy Halloween.

color in motion

  #

if you thought color theory was a blast before, hold on to your crayons... top props for claudia cortés' color in motion. it is a stellar interactive site that makes learning, teaching, and experiencing color theory possibly as fun as it ever could be. it's clean and impeccably well crafted design is a pure delight for all who enjoy color, it's symbolism, and it's universal and cultural communicative powers.  created as cortés' MFA design thesis at Rochester Institute of Technology; it has won numerous web design and teaching awards and recently won ID magazine's best of category (the highest award) for it's annual student design review. jospeh albers would definitely dig it.

advice for young persons wanting to make a start in the world of stencils

  #

:: stencil your hearts out :: www.banksy.co.uk

  • First off, stencil anything. If you wait for the perfect idea you will be waiting for ever. Besides, cleverness is never as entertaining as blatant stupidity, failure and public humiliation
  • Obtain a sharp knife. Blunt knives result in fluffy pictures and make the whole process long and boring. Snap off blades of British steel are best.
  • Draw your artwork on paper, glue onto some card then cut straight through the both. Acetate is apparently quite good but any sort of free cardboard is okay. Stiff 1mm to 1.5mm board is ideal.
  • Get a small roll of gaffa tape, pre-tear small strips and stick them on your shirt inside your coat.
  • Find a suitable piece of card to act as a folder. For instance when using red paint cut the stencil into the bottom of a pizza box so when you get paint all over your fingers its not so suspicious.
  • Leave the house before you find something worth staying in for.
