Fourth Tuesdays at Magdalena's Teahouse

  #
Tim Lane (www.theatticwhichisdesire.com) and Aaron Curtner (Luddite) have organized an open mic poetry night at the newly opened performance space, Magdalena's Teahouse (in the 2000 block of Michigan Ave., Lansing).  Owner Miko Fossum has opened the space as a Turkish-style teahouse, decorated in reds and golds and amply furnished with couches and floor cushions (sorry, no hookahs) as a place where musicians and poets can gather and hone their craft on the ears of receptive audiences.  Her offerings include teas and a small selection of baked goods, so your gracious compliance with a small cover charge (usually $5) is what makes this sort of thing possible.  She also holds a farmer's market out front each Sunday.

Tim and Aaron hope to have a rotating cast of hosts for the poetry open mics, which are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30.  The first one was a great success, with high caliber works read by new and established poets alike.  If you are interested in hosting or participating, contact Tim via his website (above).

There has been a recent upsurge of art-oriented businesses along the Michigan Ave. corridor, including Carmen Paradise's (bassist for Calliope and solo artist) Paradise Salon and Art Gallery, and the freshly opened Dancing Crane Fine Art Gallery.  Even the venerable Green Door Lounge is under new ownership, offering the same blues- and bluegrass-based music in a much less smoky environment, with windows.  It's good to see this neighborhood transform.

Anyone know of other events at Magdalena's?

A night of Kraut Rock! Sept. 10 there will be a showing of the 1970 free concert from the group Can, followed by what is (as far as I know, but please correct me if not) Lansing's only post-punk, kraut rock outfit, Brickburner. And I agree with Peter, it's great to see some action on the Eastside. Also, word has it that City Pulse will be moving into that neighborhood as well8/11/2004 11:35:39 AM

Seth Bernard (www.earthworksmusic.com) will perform September 2, for $8. This is worth it, but if you're cheap advance tickets can be had for $7.8/18/2004 7:15:47 AM

Poet Diane Wakoski was spotted in the audience at the last open mic night. She was a contemporary of Ginsberg and many of the other beats. Check out her collection "Emerald Ice." Maybe next time she can be convinced to read some of her work.9/9/2004 2:30:15 AM
